complexity - a taboo word in project management?

I am amazed how many managers react to the term "complexity" quickly - usually with a "clever" answer or solution. The word is fashionable, high class sounds, is associated with challenge and importance, mysterious sounds and triggers something out of respect and admiration. Probably it is common in the executive floor, the only to know what it is all about with "complexity". Another term for Bullshit Bingo ?

taboo word or technical term?
The term is simply misunderstood and therefore improperly installed. Actually is often confused between complex and complicated . The world of traditional project management, mainly influenced by the engineering know (except in the IT sector), mainly the logic of the complex, which is that every problem, no matter how complicated it is, by decomposition into sub-units is solvable. If a problem is to deal with linear time, but it's just complicated, or hyper-complicated. Thus, situations are highly complicated, but not necessarily complex, and vice versa, complex systems can be quite simple. Certain situations may prove both properties.

Specifically ...
For example, a motor is complicated, and not complex. Even though I have no talent for mechanics, I can, with time and patience to disassemble and reassemble the engine so that it works again. The behavior of the system is pretty clearly predictable . When I press the button to run the engine

The aquarium, however is quite simple: glass pebbles and water plants and fish from time to time some food . Simple but complex: if I have all the elements together nicely lays on my desk, I will hardly understand how it works. Even worse, I will destroy the system , it will not be possible to return the system to its initial state. And it is not predictable Sun: How to behave in the fish when I to the glass knock? An aquarium is complex - biological - of course - alive.

A misunderstanding leads to logical errors
The term "complex", without reflection, is called "a little more complicated than" perceived and understood. So it is not. Complex is complex, and not a bit different than complicated. Complex projects are difficult projects - but they are not complex because they are difficult, but vice versa. The true nature of projects to identify correctly simply means to make use of a rough start thinking errors. And this error induces false - in the sense of inappropriate - mental patterns and attitudes toward the project. Hence the use of inappropriate methods, tools and project management approaches. One can imagine where this could lead.

ignorance and uncertainty Perhaps as constitutive elements
it is a sign of the (unconscious) overwhelmed , the term "complexity" does not really understand - or understand to want to. Edgar Morin has expressed as follows:
"The very idea of the complexity included in the inability to unify, come to the impossibility to a conclusion, a partial uncertainty, a Teilunentscheidbarkeit and Eigenständnis the final tête-à-Tête with the unspeakable" ( Translation of the redactor)
«L'idée même de complexité en elle comporte l'impossibilité d'unifier, l'impossibilité d'une earlier on, part d'incertitude , une et la part d'indécidabilité reconnaissance du tête-à-tête avec l'final indicible » .

inconvenient for our rational thinking logic, right? admit from the start that we do not have it all under control - and will never have ...

As man is usually dealing with complexity you find in a later article ...
